A selection of what I've read this past week.

My main newsletter, Complex Machinery, includes a section called "In Other News..." It's where I list one-liners about interesting articles that didn't fit into any segments.

You can think of this list as a version of In Other News, but with a wider remit than Complex Machinery's "risk, AI, and related topics."

Above the fold

  1. genAI bots have been accused of stealing people's labor and creative style. Adding to the list: stealing credentials by signing someone's else's name to their work. (Nieman Lab)
  2. There are several parallels between the genAI craze and the 2008 housing crisis. Here's one I hadn't thought about before: the arrival of weird financing. (Dean Baker)
  3. A man in Singapore lands in jail over a prank AI-generated image. (BBC)
  4. This week the Financial Times is running a series on what it takes to be an online creator. Here's the first article. (FT)
  5. Space agencies aim to place nuclear reactors on the moon in order to provide power for equipment and facilities. (New York Times)
  6. The shift to agentic commerce may lead companies to shift to more practical, detail-oriented marketing copy on their websites. (New York Times)
  7. Need a getaway en route to your getaway? Try a hidden airport bar. (Washington Post)
  8. Scripps cuts TV news anchors as it shifts to a format that resembles social media. (Bloomberg)
  9. London's transit authority ran a trial of live facial recognition systems. The results weren't exactly impressive. (The Guardian)

The rest of the best

  • Thanks to a flood of genAI-based submissions, Google temporarily halts its bug bounty program for open-source software. (TechCrunch)
  • The Bank of England joins the list of those expressing concern over financial markets' exposure to genAI companies. (FT)
  • Meta and a journalist disagree on whether the Muse AI Agent performed unauthorized data access. But just in case, Apple is locking down agents' access to local files on MacOS. (Tom's Hardware and Ars Technica, respectively)
  • France's recent interest rate hike may signal a full-on national debt crisis. (Les Echos 🇫🇷)
  • As Anthropic prepares to go public, its IPO prospectus includes details on its finances and some views on AI safety. (CNBC , Der Spiegel 🇩🇪)
  • By claiming that its genAI work is experimental research, Meta dramatically reduces its US tax burden. (New York Times)
  • A federal judge ruled that at least one use of the Flock camera network was “constitutionally problematic” and a form of "mass surveillance." (Washington Post)
  • Remember how OpenAI bots broke into several websites? The company claims that it's spending up to $500k per day to research those incidents and check for others. (The Guardian)
